How to Set Up a Golf Practice Area in Your Yard

By admin - Posted on 27 July 2008

If you are a golf lover and you want a practice area in your back yard, it is easy to set one up.  There are only a few things you need to do to have an area for golfing.

The first thing you need to do is pick the area of your yard you want to use.  Do you want to use your entire back yard?  Is your yard big enough to contain several greens or just one?  Most yards are big enough for one practice green, a target green, and an area where you can hit your shots.

Once you decide on the space you want to use for the practice area in your yard you need to think about nets.    If your yard is not big enough for a practice green you need to invest in a really good net.  The net will catch your shots.

The second thing you will need is high quality practice turf.  You will also need a practice area to hit the balls inside of.  The practice turf should be of good quality so it is very similar to an actual golfing green.  You shouldn’t put the turf in permanently into your yard because you might regret it later.  This is because you might decide you want to change the area of the green or the angle the green is facing.  It is best to invest in turf that is portable.  This will allow you to change the distances of the turf to the net you set up in your yard.

You will lay down the turf in your yard for your practice green.  You should only do this if your yard is big enough.  The green should be able to accept chip shots.  When you are hitting balls on your practice green you want to make sure the balls don’t bounce.  If the turf is too hard or your yard is not accepting then the balls will bounce too high.  This could cause broken windows and more.  The best way to minimize the bouncing is to place the turf over sand or something very soft.  The mistake people make is when they use a concrete pad under the turf and not a soft pad.

A portable practice mat is the best thing because you can move it around the green.  If you want to have a chipping surface that is large you should be sure to contour a larger area with a synthetic turf.  You might even want to hire a commercial company to install your practice green in the backyard of your home.  You must have a drainage area.  This is because if it rains and there is standing water in your green you could have a really big problem.

It is very easy to set up a practice green in your back yard.  If you love golf and you want a practice green, be sure you have the appropriate space and you use the right materials.  You should also be sure you have the right cushioning underneath the turf so there is not a problem with the balls bouncing too high.  Your practice green should be exactly like a golf course.
