The challenge of The Highland Course is both natural and design influenced. The natural setting on which the golf course has been incorporated into is not only breathtakingly beautiful but also lends itself nicely to a design that only Donald Steel could envision. Other golf course architects were shown the property and they came to the same conclusion; a world-class golf course could not be built in this location. Donald Steel was shown the property and his eye saw something completely different from the others, he saw The Highland Course. Steel’s love of the short game is evident in his design. The use of the player’s imagination on and around the putting surface as well as the skill to successfully navigate around the deep-faced bunkers that protect many of the greens is crucial in scoring well.
