Lower Your Score,Become a Better Putter!

There is nothing more frustrating than getting to the green in regulation and then walking away with a bogey or worse because of poor putting. In fact most people lose most of their strokes during a round on the green and yet this is the area of the game that most golfers spend very little time learning and practicing. It is truly unfortunate as a missed two foot putt will cost you the same amount of strokes as a 280 yard drive that splits the fairway. This article is going to give you a few tips to help you improve your putting.

Knowledge is Power!

Implementing these tips will lead to golf putting improvement which will help you to lower your score and take some of the aggravation out of putting and make the entire round more enjoyable. They are also used by professionals to help them putt more accurately because on the tour one missed putt can cost them the tournament and a lot of money.
One of the first things you should do is learn the local knowledge. If you watch the pros play you will always here the announcers say things like "that putt will break left towards the water." Every course has its own determining factor for influencing putts. For example, if you are playing on a course that has a large lake in the vicinity oftentimes putts, when they are slowing down, will break towards that body of water. The same can be true if you have mountains, valleys or even highways near the course. So take some time and ask one of the pros at your course about the local knowledge regarding the greens.

Reading the Green Will Lower Your Score

Learn to read the direction that grain of the grass on the green is running. This can make a huge difference in how hard you need to hit the putt. If you are going downhill and down grain then this is going to be a fast putt whereas a downhill into the grain will not be as fast. The easiest way to know which direction the grass is growing is by sight. First locate the sun this is the way the grain (most likely) is growing. The next step may take a little practice but once you understand it you will find that it will be very helpful in helping you to improve your putting.
When you are standing behind your putt look at the coloring of the grass between your ball and the hole. If it appears to be shiny then you are going with the grain if it looks dull you are putting into the grain. This is one of the reasons that the pros walk around their putts so many times, it is not just for the read on the line of the putt but also to figure out which way the grain is running.

Easily Drop a Couple of Strokes per Round

Remember that any golf putting improvement will help you quickly shave a few strokes per round and if you play on any local leagues or are involved in local golfing tournaments then you know that every stroke is extremely important.
